Office Secret Santa: how to run it (free generator)
Workplace exchanges succeed when they are optional, cheap and simple. Here is a timeline that works for small teams and large departments.
Timeline
- 3 weeks before: announce it, make it opt-in, set a budget ($15–$25 is typical).
- About 2½ weeks before: run the draw and send each person their private link by chat or email.
- 2 weeks before: remind people to add wishlists.
- Party day: exchange gifts, then reveal (or don't) who gave what.
Keep it inclusive
- Participation should be voluntary, with no pressure from managers.
- Choose a low budget so junior staff aren't stretched.
- Ask people to skip alcohol, personal-care items and gag gifts that could embarrass someone.
- Remote colleagues: ask for a shipping address via the wishlist note, or switch to e-gift cards. See virtual Secret Santa.
Exclusions at work
Use exclusion rules so managers don't draw their direct reports, or so people who sit together don't draw each other. The generator checks every rule and tells you if a draw is impossible.
Questions
How much should office Secret Santa cost?
$15–$25 is a typical range. Keep it low and optional.
Can the organizer play too?
Yes. The organizer page doesn't show who drew whom unless the organizer chooses to reveal results, so the organizer can join fairly.
