How to play Secret Santa
Secret Santa is a gift exchange where everyone buys one present for one secretly assigned person. Here is how to run it from the first message to the reveal.
Upload a photo + a few interests for each person → we draw names and hand every Santa gift picks they're more likely to love.

Everyone draws one name, buys that person a gift within the agreed budget, and gives it without saying who it is from until the reveal.
Step by step
- Pick an organizer. One person collects names and sends the invite.
- Agree on three things. The budget, the exchange date and whether givers are revealed at the end.
- Draw names. Use the Secret Santa generator so nobody draws themselves and couples stay apart.
- Share wishlists. Each person adds two or three ideas to their link. A short questionnaire helps people who never know what to say.
- Shop. One gift, at the agreed budget. Browse ideas with the gift finder.
- Wrap and label anonymously. Print the recipient's name on the tag, not yours. Printable gift tags help.
- Exchange. Hand out gifts one at a time so the room watches each opening.
- Reveal or keep it secret. Many groups let each recipient guess their Santa first.
A timeline that works
| When | What |
|---|---|
| 3–4 weeks before | Invite, budget, date, draw names |
| 2–3 weeks before | Wishlists in, shopping |
| 1 week before | Reminder about budget and date |
| The day | Exchange and reveal |
Playing at a distance

Variations to try
Want stealing and chaos? Play white elephant. In Australia and Ireland the same game is Kris Kringle. Compare formats in gift exchange games.
Running the draw for a real group
This Secret Santa generator turns a list of names into a fair, private draw in one step. Type everyone taking part, press Draw, and the name drawer assigns each person exactly one recipient. Nobody draws themselves, nobody is left out, and the organizer never sees the pairings unless they choose to reveal them. Each participant receives a private link that shows only their own match, so the surprise holds right up to the gift exchange.
Groups rarely fit a simple hat draw. Couples want to avoid each other, housemates already swap presents, and last year's pairs want someone new. Add exclusions and the generator respects every one of them, in both directions, every time. Set a budget cap so every Santa spends in the same range, pick the exchange date, and give the group a name. The settings travel with each private link, so nobody has to ask twice.
The name drawer works for any size: three friends, a household of five, an office of forty, or an extended family spread across time zones. Send the links by WhatsApp, SMS, Messenger or the team chat. Remote colleagues join the same draw as people in the room, and the result is identical either way.
More ways to run your gift exchange
Not every party is classic Secret Santa. Running a steal-and-swap night? Use the White Elephant generator for the turn order and rules. Families in Australia, Ireland and much of Europe call the same tradition Kris Kringle, with its own customs. Before you draw, send the Secret Santa questionnaire so every Santa knows sizes, favorite snacks and hard no's.
Once names are drawn, the next question is always what to buy. Start with gift ideas under $20, step up to gift ideas under $25, or go bigger with gift ideas under $50. Each list is sorted by the kind of person you drew, so you can match the gift to the recipient instead of guessing.
Draw once, share the links, and enjoy the gift exchange.
Private reveal links for every person
Every participant gets a private reveal link. Type the names, press Draw, and the draw runs on our server. Each link is long and unguessable, opens only that person's match, and travels however your group already talks: WhatsApp, SMS, or a copied link in the team chat. Nobody types an email address, nobody waits for an inbox, and the organizer never sees the pairings unless they choose to reveal them. Exclusions, a budget cap, an exchange date and wishlists all work the same way. Open the generator.

Start with photos →Secret Santa generator with exclusions
Keep couples, housemates or last year's pairs apart. Add an exclusion in the wizard and every draw respects it, with no reshuffling by hand. Draw with exclusions.
Secret Santa for 3, 5 or 10 people
Three people is the minimum for a fair draw, and the generator handles it cleanly. Five fits a household or a small team. Ten covers the whole office or the extended family, each with their own private link. Add the names and draw.
Secret Santa generator with wishlist
Every participant opens their link and writes a wishlist their Santa sees right away. Pair it with the wishlist guide for what to write.
Secret Santa gift ideas under $25
Twenty-five dollars buys a gift that feels chosen. See the gift ideas under $25, sorted by the kind of person you drew.
What each Santa opens
One private link. One name. Gifts that fit. Every Santa sees the same layout after the draw:
- No accounts. Links go out by WhatsApp, SMS or email.
- Unpeekable. Each link shows one person, only to its holder.
- Budget-aware. Every suggestion stays inside your limit.
Example: Family Christmas 2026, $25 budget. You are Secret Santa for Jordan, who likes coffee, hiking and board games. Suggestions: a pour-over coffee kit, a trail headlamp and a two-player strategy game.

Questions
How many people do you need for Secret Santa?

The group decides. A guessing round before the reveal is the most popular choice.
What if someone drops out after the draw?
Delete the group and draw again so every link stays correct, then resend the new links.
How much should you spend?
$20–$25 is the common middle ground; $10 suits big casual groups and $50 close family.
