Pick the format before you invite anyone
A Galentine's gift exchange runs on the same skeleton as any name swap: a set budget, a fixed date, and an assignment that stops anyone from drawing her own name. The part that surprises hosts is how differently the party behaves depending on the format. Decide the format first, put it in the invitation, and the rest of the planning falls into line.
Use the drawer above to settle assignments while everyone is present, or before you send the invitation text. Because results appear only on your screen, read them aloud, screenshot them, or write each name on a card and hand it over in person.
The three ways to play
1. Secret Galentine
Each guest is assigned exactly one other guest and buys a gift for her alone. It is the calmest version and works well for a group that mainly wants to eat, talk, and open one thoughtful gift.
- Set the budget tier and state it twice: once in the invitation, once on the day.
- Every giver includes a short card signed with a nickname or in disguised handwriting. The guess-your-giver round is half the fun.
- Ask each person to share a three-item wishlist with the host, who passes notes along privately.
- Keep the reveal near the end so the guessing game has time to build.
2. White Elephant
Everyone brings one wrapped gift at the budget tier. The drawer produces a random turn order, which you read aloud. The first player picks a wrapped gift and opens it; each following player either picks from the pile or steals an opened gift.
- Steal limit: a gift can be stolen twice, then it is locked. Write this on a card near the pile.
- The first player gets a final chance to steal from the last player once everyone has had a turn.
- Number the wrapped gifts with sticky notes so the turn order has something to call out.
- Bring two or three dollar-store decoy jokes if the group is small and the pile thins out.
3. Favorite Things
Each guest brings three identical items at the budget tier, meaning the same item bought three times. The drawer assigns each person three different givers, so everyone goes home with a set of three items chosen by three friends. It spreads cost and variety nicely and gives the group a natural show-and-tell slot.
- Announce clearly that the three items must be identical, not three different items.
- Ask guests to wrap them together or bag them as a set to keep the table tidy.
- Give each person two minutes to explain why she chose her item before the next set is handed out.
Gift ideas by budget tier
$10 tier
- A good hand cream and a small pair of cozy socks rolled together
- A pretty notebook with a two-pack of fine-tip pens
- A single bag of specialty coffee or loose-leaf tea with a small strainer
- A mini candle in a jar with a matchbook
- A set of hair clips or scrunchies in a small pouch
$15 tier
- A silk-feel pillowcase, folded and ribboned
- A small desk organizer with sticky notes and a nice pen
- A mini skincare duo, mask plus lip balm
- A pretty mug with a tin of hot chocolate
- A compact makeup mirror with a small pouch
$20 tier
- A soft throw blanket folded with a ribbon
- A small jewelry case with a delicate pair of earrings
- A shower steamer set with a wooden tray
- A cookbook or a recipe card box with a nice pen
- A reusable water bottle in a color she would pick herself
Keep price tags off and bag gifts loosely so the wrapping is not a clue. If a gift could read as a hint about someone's habits, choose something else.

- Four weeks out: pick the date, the format, and the budget tier. Text the group and confirm headcount.
- Three weeks out: collect names and any exclusions, such as a pair who already exchange gifts every year. Run the drawer once everyone has confirmed.
- Two weeks out: send each guest her assigned name, the budget, and a two-line wishlist note. Remind her that the wishlist is a guide, not a shopping list.
- One week out: confirm the food plan and who is bringing what. Resend the rules card for White Elephant or the three-identical-items reminder for Favorite Things.
- Day before: set out a card table for the gifts, print the rules card, and chill anything that needs chilling. Allow 30 to 45 minutes for the exchange itself.
Etiquette and host notes
- State the budget as a ceiling, not a target, so nobody feels obligated to spend the maximum.
- Handle exclusions quietly. If two guests would rather not exchange, adjust the list before you draw and say nothing about it later.
- Keep every gift within the tier. A generous exception makes the person who followed the rules feel awkward.
- Provide wrapping paper and tape for the White Elephant pile, plus a bin bag for the debris.
- Keep a pad and pen at the table so the host can record who gave what, useful for thank-you notes later.
- If someone cannot attend at the last minute, hold her gift and arrange a private swap rather than redrawing the whole group.
- Take a group photo of the gifts, not the wrapping, so nobody feels exposed about what she brought.
One last practical point: if the group is larger than about twelve, split into two exchanges. Turn order gets long, and the room gets loud enough that instructions stop carrying.
Want private reveal links instead?
The drawer above shows results on this screen only. Draw names on the main tool: each person gets a private link that shows only who they buy for, the budget, and that person's wishlist.

Questions
Can I draw names again if someone is unhappy?
Yes, but agree on that before you start. Redrawing after guests have shopped wastes their money, so settle exclusions first and draw once. The drawer will never assign anyone her own name.
What should I do if a guest cannot attend?
Keep her assignment as it is and deliver the gift privately, or pair her with someone else in a small side swap. Do not run a full second draw for the group.
How does the steal rule work in White Elephant?
A gift may be stolen twice, then it is locked. The first player gets one final steal after the last turn. Post the rule where everyone can see it and appoint one person to track steals out loud.
Is the Favorite Things format expensive?
At the $10 tier, three identical items means roughly $30 to $35 total per guest, an estimate that varies by where you shop. Mention the total in the invitation so nobody is caught off guard.
