How the game works

A New Year gift exchange game turns a pile of wrapped parcels into an hour of table talk. Everyone arrives with one wrapped gift inside the agreed price range, the host randomizes the turn order, and each turn is decided by a die roll or a themed card. Nobody knows who leaves with what until the final round. This page covers the card rules, the dice rules, how to set up, an honest time estimate, and a few variations for groups that want more or less chaos.

Before the party: setup

  1. Set the price range. State a narrow band (for example, 20 to 30 dollars) so gifts feel comparable. A wide range makes the late rounds feel unfair.
  2. Ask for wrapped gifts with a tag on the bottom. The giver's name goes on the tag, not the outside, so stealing stays anonymous until the end.
  3. Fix the roster. The game needs at least 3 players and works best under 30. Past that, split into two circles.
  4. Choose your rounds. Three rounds is the standard. Each round gives every player one turn.
  5. Pick a die. Any single six-sided die works, but roll it on a tray so it does not land under the sofa.
  6. Print or write the action cards. Twelve cards is plenty for a group of ten to twelve; reshuffle as needed.
  7. Put gifts in a central pile rather than leaving them with owners. It avoids accidental early reveals.

Dice rules

At the start of each turn, the active player rolls once and does what the face says:

RollAction
1Pass your gift to the left.
2Pass your gift to the right.
3Swap with any player you choose.
4Open your gift now and keep it face up.
5Steal any unopened gift from another player.
6Roll again.

Three house rules keep the die fair. First, a stolen gift cannot be stolen again during the same turn; the steal ends the turn. Second, an opened gift stays with its holder and is off limits to later steals. Third, a player may only choose targets who still hold a wrapped gift when the roll calls for a swap or a steal, otherwise the action passes to the closest eligible player. The tool above handles the shuffle and the die so the host can play without paper.

Card rules

Cards replace the die on any turn the host prefers, or every third turn if you want a mixed rhythm. Draw one card, read it aloud, and resolve it immediately. Most cards name a person or a group by a visible trait, so keep the wording broad enough that someone always qualifies. Sample cards:

If a card cannot be resolved because no one qualifies, discard it and draw again, or treat it as a roll of 1. Decide before the game so the ruling is consistent.

Running the rounds

The turn order drawn at the start stays fixed for the whole game. Each round, every player acts once in that order. Track rounds on a notepad or let the tool do it. When the final player finishes the final round, the host announces that the game is over and everyone opens whatever they are holding. Leftover gifts in the pile, if any, go to the last players in the order or get raffled with a single die roll.

How long it takes

Plan on about 3 to 5 minutes per player per round as an estimate, including reading cards and negotiating swaps. A group of ten playing three rounds usually lands somewhere between 45 and 75 minutes. Groups of five or fewer often finish in 25 to 40 minutes. If the party is running long, cut to two rounds or drop the card deck.

After the last round

Once the game ends, let people swap voluntarily only if both parties agree, and keep the mandatory rules closed. Take a group photo with the gifts, collect the wrapping for recycling, and note which cards landed best so next year's deck is sharper.

Questions

How many players do I need for a New Year gift exchange game?

Three is the minimum; ten to twelve is the sweet spot. Above fifteen, split into two circles so turns do not drag.

Should I use cards, dice, or both?

Use the die on every turn and draw a card every third turn. Cards add theme, dice keep the pace steady.

What happens if someone rolls a 6 several times in a row?

That player keeps rolling until a different face comes up, then performs that action. Cap it at three rerolls for time.

Can opened gifts be stolen?

No. Once a gift is opened it stays with its holder. Only wrapped, unopened gifts are eligible for swaps and steals.
